Can I Put A Turtle In My Pond With Koi Fish? Will He Bother Them?

This question was submitted to us this week and since it is such a common question we decided to publish it along with our answer for your enjoyment and comments.  If some of you have ponds with Turtles and Koi or other fish living together please share your experience in the comment below.

Q: Can I add a Turtle to my Koi pond or will he bother the fish?

A: There are several variables to consider.  Firstly, it depends on how large your fish are. Often times turtles will go after the fish and disturb the peace and tranquility in the pond, they chase the fish around and don't let them rest. Larger fish cannot be totally devoured by the turtles but if they get close enough to the fish they may nip their fins or tails.

The size of the pond and the size of the turtle(s) are also factors to consider.  Small ponds force the aquatic life into cramped living spaces and don't allow the fish space to swim away if the turtle gets aggressive.  So, although it could work, we normally don't recommend it. Nevertheless, if you want to give it a try be sure to keep an eye on the fish and it could be they will dwell in peace ; )

One more tip, you may want to prop up a nice looking rock within the pond so the turtles are able to get out of the water from time to time and sun-bathe, otherwise, we have seen them get sick, especially during the long and cold winter months.

We decided to get rid of our turtle, they make too much waste, foul the water, and eat a ton of food. Still, he was cool to look at and definitely added something to our little water hole ; )

Hello would you mind stating which blog platform you’re working with? I’m planning to start my own blog soon but I’m having a tough time making a decision between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your layout seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something completely unique. P.S My apologies for being off-topic but I had to ask!
